Renting a vacation house for a week; what should I bring?
Posted on Dec 27, 2009 under vacation houses | 9 Comments
For many years, I’ve vacationed in hotels, this year, my family and I will be renting a house for a week. In my family, I have myself, my husband, my two teenaged daughters, and my mother. The vacation house has three bedrooms, frig, oven, all that stuff. The owner of the house has said that I should pack sheets for the beds, and all paper products like toilet paper and napkins. He provides the plates, pots, cups, utencils. From your experience, is there anything else that I should remember to pack with us to make our vacation wonderful?
Don’t forget to pack the Jenga game…
Deck of cards will be helpful…
And if you smoke, or drink alcohol (cigarettes, beer, wine, or whatever)
‘Nuf said about that…! (hide it from the teens, or it will mysteriously disappear)
And ice, if the fridge doesn’t have an ice maker…
Tunebox, laptop, cell phones, books, magazines, walking shoes, live-in Butler, portable T.V., (leave the in-laws and teenage boyfriends at home unless they’re the Butler, Maid, or personal valet) condoms, prescription medication (and lots of it), Nyquil, sleep aids, mosquito repellent (leave The Bible at home) inflatable swimming devices, cheese whiz (have I left anything out?) DVD’s, CD’s, the phone number of a trusted Psycho Therapist, ear-plugs (for your husband), blind-fold (for yourself), band-aids, Neosporin ointment, and the phone number to the Dr. Phil show…
Now you’re ready…
And remember…
When you get back…
You’ll need to take a vacation from your vacation…

Only you know what is ‘essential’ for your comfort and ultimately your ‘relaxed’ environment . . . for me? I’d stay in a motel – with a micro and fridge . . . at least that way, I am spared housekeeping and laundry – more time to have fun, and no extra work to do, when getting home! Have fun . . .

Pack a buckshot to protect your teenaged daughters.
Pack fishing equipment if you’re going near a lake/river.
Pack many batteries just in case.
Pack medications of every type.
Pack a nice preferably NEW first aid kit.
Pack some condoms…
Nothing else comes to mind.

Don’t stress if you forget something it’s only one week so make it fun. I would recommend a good family game or at least a pack of cards.

Paper towels and toilet paper would be the first thing. You wold be amazed how many people forget both. Also I would bring some Clorox wipes for those inconvenient spills. Don’t forget salt and pepper and any other spice you can’t live without when cooking. Even if you don’t plan on cooking bring salt and pepper for takeout.

I have found that even though the Pots & Pans etc are provided… it can vary greatly from one rental to the next. Some will have everything of convience and others you would not even think about boiling water in a what is provided.
Being prepared for the worst senerio, was always the best plan of action. MUST have: Travel size First aid kit, Clorox Wipes, 2 rolls Paper towels. We enjoyed using paper plates w/ picnic plate holders & plastic cups & utensils as much as possilble, when on vacation. Travel size condements, laundry detergent and shampoos. 2 Beach towels each, can be used for shower & washed after a day at the beach. Mostly everthing will pack & fit in a Single Load hamper and make it easy to travel with.
Also, as you arrive, take notice where the nearest dollar store or Walmart is and pick-up the few minor necesities when you arrive… 1 microwave plate, paper cups & plates etc.
Good luck and enjoy.
