I need to have a website in order to run a DVD rentals business from home. How do I create a website???
Can somebody please help me in creating and hosting a DVD rentals website.
Hi! Creating a business web site is not like popping down the shops for a bag of crisps. Business sites are there to make money so they have to look good and perform well and if they looked the slightest bit shoddy, then they will fail. There is a lot more to web design and development than just all the the techi stuff. There is marketing and psychology to name but a few.
Before you launch your self headlong into this business venture there are a few things you should do.
1. Have you a business plan? These usually show projected figures over a 3 year period. These are not just done for the benefit of banks but are used by businesses as benchmarks to see if they are hitting their projections or not.
2. Have you done any market research? Is there a market for your service? Just because you think there is does not necessarily mean there is in fact one.
3.With reference back to the business plan – have you sat down and worked out how much all this is going to cost you? If not, then you should do it now and don’t miss out anything. Things like how are you going to package the DVD’s? How much will that cost? How much time will you need to spend packing them up – time is money! How much will itg cost to post them. How much will the stock cost you. I could go on but it is begining to sound like a marketing lecture.
With regards the site, you will have to pay someone who knows what they are doing for you will need a lot of back end stuff. Your site will have to look and feel the part otherwise you will be throwing your money away – don’t try and do it yourself in an attempt to save money – it wont. You have been given a lot of good advice in these answers – use it wisely.
Here is a tip – if you do your homework regarding your business plan and funding etc and you find that it is not viable – it takes a strong person to walk away from their dream, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that despite of what the figures and market research tells you it will work anyway – too many businesses go down the toilet because a) they are underfunded & b) there is no market for their products or services.
Hope this helped you a bit and good luck!
Kind regards
Iain

do a search for free website builders and then decide which one fits your needs.Maybe weebly
or learn html/css and build one yourself

Good luck with that. I hope you have the inventory to compete with the likes of Netflix and BlockBuster…
You actually need *three* things: A website, a hosting company and a domain. Obtain them in reverse order.
You can get an inexpensive domain and hosting service from GoDaddy.com. They also offer web site building tools, so you basically have a one-stop shopping site for all your needs.

You might be best to get someone to build the site for you, if you’re not sure where to start. A decent looking site will bring more business than one that looks a bit shonky.
Try somewhere like freelancer.co.uk – they allow you to post your project, and then freelancers will bid to do the work. Be prepared to pay a bit though, if you’re looking for something like lovefilm or whatever. But it will get you a decent site.

Not knowing how to "make a website" and wishing to make a "business website" is not going to be very easy…
You will need a complete accounting system, a catalogue system, some payment gateway, and a serious admin back-end.
None of this is for any beginner, not even a good amateur, and can’t be developed (not easily anyway) with ANY WYSIWYG or site builder…
The use of pre-written scripts such as Joomla or any other CMS is, also, rather reserved to at least experienced coders.
You will be better off paying the services of a professional to set-up a small "e-commerce".
Expect a minmum of 500€/£/$ for anything serious.
You can contact a coder at http://www.web2coders.com

I’m not sure I’d want to go into that business. Blockbuster is closing over 900 stores because of lack of business and there was a piece on the radio about some of the ways people are cutting back and one couple said Nexflix.

1) you learn how to use a CSM (content system manager) like Joomla or Drupal
2) buy an a good database hosting service like Hostgator
